Title: Attached Pdf The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find - and Keep - Love

"A groundbreaking book that redefines what it means to be in a relationship." (John Gray, PhD., best-selling author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus)

We already rely on science to tell us what to eat, when to exercise, and how long to sleep. Why not use science to help us improve our relationships? In this revolutionary book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel Heller scientifically explain why some people seem to navigate relationships effortlessly, while others struggle.

Discover how an understanding of adult attachment - the most advanced relationship science in existence today - can help us find and sustain love. Pioneered by psychologist John Bowlby in the 1950s, the field of attachment posits that each of us behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways:

  • Anxious people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner's ability to love them back
  • Avoidant people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness.
  • Secure people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving.

Attached guides listeners in determining what attachment style they and their mate (or potential mate) follow, offering a road map for building stronger, more fulfilling connections with the people they love.

*Includes a PDF of the attachment style questionnaire

Eye-opening overview and introduction, but simplistic if you crave in-depth information. I have been in therapy on and off with different providers for almost 3 decades, and been in many failed relationships. Yet not one therapist ever mentioned the words "adult attachment theory" to me until I decided to see a new therapist at age 55. My new therapist recommended this book in my first session and it opened my eyes to what really happens in relationships. However, it is a somewhat simplistic book. It is very accessible to a broad audience, but leaves a lot of unanswered questions, including why we are the way we are and what we might do about it. I read most of it in one day. For anyone craving more information, I highly recommend Mindsight by Dan Siegel, which is a much denser book about the science and complexities of adult attachment issues, how they play out in real life, and what can realistically be done to resolve them. It took me weeks to finish. In particular, I think Attached does a disservice to what it calls "anxious-avoidant" attachment types--with no information at all on this type. Siegel calls this type "disorganized," and people with this type of attachment are in particular need of helpful, concrete information. To take the issue a step further for practical information for resolving relationship issues pertaining to attachment, I recommend Getting the Love you Want by Harville Hendrix.Much more than what I expected. Eye-opening, relationship saving. My psychiatrist pretty much made me order this book even though in my mind I was dead set against, thinking it was going to be a waste of time, perfectly convinced I knew everything about myself and whatever kind of "attached" I was.Whoa.Was I wrong. And I hate to be wrong. Thanks, Dr. D.General Information: This book is an easy read. It's not that stuff you need to be a rocket-scientist to figure out - in layman terms it briefs you on the broader different styles of attachment: secure, anxious and avoidant. The book helps you determine what kind of attachment styles you have via reading examples of others attachment styles and there are also some quizzes if you're still not sure, all of which I found useful. I really liked that the authors presented examples of scenarios of attachment styles and encouraged the reader to read through the scenarios and guess the kind of attachment styles that were presented based on the knowledge we had already been given in the earlier part of the book. I find that a helpful way to learn.Given that I was not into reading this in the first place - the fact that it was light reading, interesting and at times fun - made me very attuned to what this book had to say. I agree it wasn't super in-depth but I don't fault this book for that because if it was super in depth I would have not even read it. My psychiatrist knows what the heck she is talking about and she choose this book for a reason - so I have zero complaints. I think she was even impressed with how much I was able to take away after reading it in one day.Personal Information:This book taught me a lot about myself. With women, I have anxious attachments - stemming from an unpredictable childhood. I pretty much tend to gravitate toward any one who acts maternal with me and cling to her. This isn't necessarily about romantic attachment for me, it spelled out a lot of patterns with all the people I have in my life: from friends, family members, partners and even my doctors.I had started to notice that I was feeling unsettled in my relationship with my fiance. I was getting annoyed at everything he did. Little things, like the way he chewed. I would get annoyed when he would text me and completely ignore him for hours at a time. Until I read this book, I didn't realize the problem was me and that with men I have a very avoidant attachment style. I was able to take the criticism to heart without feeling persecuted because the book doesn't make you feel that way even though avoidants can come off as very very harsh and cruel and indifferent.I'm now able to communicate more effectively, recognize my own patterns of behavior, identify that I am responsible for my own actions and feelings and now I feel a real sense of control and independence because I have that knowledge. I have that security. I can reciprocate with my fiance now and not be so dismissive of him and I'm able to be a bit more open without feeling that he's trying to stop me from being my own person or that he's suffocating me.I highly recommend this book. If you want to delve super deep into this attachment thing - some other reviewers mentioned additions and alternatives but I wouldn't. I am a very learned person, a very intelligent person and I didn't need anything more in depth than this book to help me to start to recognize patterns that needed to change. I think this book is best served to people who can admit where they are on the attachment continuum. I happen to be at a place in my life now, thanks to my psychiatrist and therapist, where I am able to let my guard down a bit and accept things that are difficult for me to accept.. Maybe even just six months ago I wouldn't have been ready to admit this. But given my ability to be ready and my desire to make things right in my life now that I have a child - I didn't need a guide book to tell me how to figure out the things I needed to do to fix the areas that needed work in my life regarding my attachment styles.I disagree with the reviews that claim this book doesn't offer us any insight as to why we are the way we are and what we can do about it. Several times this book mentions the theories of infant and other kinds of attachments but does say that it's not the purpose of this book to delve into that. That's good enough for me. I was able to discern from the minimal but powerful examples they give of the attachment styles of infants to their caregivers to know why I am the way I am and I wrote a whole essay about it to share with my psychiatrist.... thanks to this book.As for what we can do about it - this was also something I didn't need a road map for. This is going to sound pretty darn simplistic but maybe that's just because it is. Kind of just do the opposite of what you're doing....???? That is how this has been working for me, anyway. But of course, I relied on the examples in the book to help direct my behavior without needing a "HOW TO" direction stamped across the page. You rely on your intuition. You rely on your knowledge. You rely on your empathy and most of all you rely on your willingness to enact change. The examples in this book were definitely not apples to apples with how I am with my fiance - but it was enough of an eye-opening experience for me to say to myself: "Oh geez..... I do things like this all the time and this is how my fiance must feel. He's just reacting to my avoidance. If I start to try to be less avoidant and give him a little bit more security by acknowledging him maybe he won't feel so frustrated or taken advantage of or hurt."And that's what I started to do. I started to recognize the behaviors I have that are avoidant and started to replace them with more healthy behaviors. At first this wasn't easy. I felt like I was losing a part of myself by giving in to him but then I realized that's silly and I went back to the book for guidance and reassurance and that's when I decided to feel more secure and in control. I'm far more independent by making the right, healthy choices for our relationship than I am being a slave to my fear of dependency. I really feel empowered by this and I thank the authors for putting this out there in a way that isn't complicated but that is so very helpful.

Catch and Kill Pdf

ISBN: B07WTF24ZC
Title: Catch and Kill Pdf Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators

In a dramatic account of violence and espionage, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Ronan Farrow exposes serial abusers and a cabal of powerful interests hell-bent on covering up the truth. At any cost.

In 2017, a routine network television investigation led Ronan Farrow to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood's most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

All the while, Farrow and his producer faced a degree of resistance they could not explain - until now. And a trail of clues revealed corruption and cover-ups from Hollywood to Washington and beyond.

This is the untold story of the exotic tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it's the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement.

Both a spy thriller and a meticulous work of investigative journalism, Catch and Kill breaks devastating new stories about the rampant abuse of power and sheds far-reaching light on investigations that shook the culture.

The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules Pdf

ISBN: 0062447971
Title: The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules Pdf A Novel (League of Pensioners)
Author: Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg
Published Date: 2016-07-12
Page: 400

“Instead of hyperbolic, mustache-twirling villains, Ingelman-Sundberg deftly orchestrates the twists and turns in the plot through the foibles of real life, capturing the rebelliousness percolating just under the surface of ignored, shuffled away elderly folks in this merry, lighthearted caper.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Swedish writers may be known for their crime novels, but Ingelman-Sundberg’s caper involves illegal activity of a rather unusual order: The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules is a story about spirited seniors determined have fun and raise some hell.” (Booklist)“Reminded me of the more mischievous moments of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” (J.B. Morrison, author of The Extra Ordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81)“A quirky, offbeat delight and a heart-warming reminder that one is never too old for some mischief.” (Tom Winter, author of Lost & Found)“A good-natured humorous crime caper.” (Independent on Sunday (UK))“Criminally fun!” (Bonniers Bokklubb (Sweden))“It has humor, brilliant dialogue, irony and warmth. A light-hearted and enjoyable detective comedy.” (PRO Pensionären (Sweden))“This is hilarious! Ocean 11 group meets the 70s group from the nursing home. I hope I am as spry as the 79 main character. They antics they get into make the book a delight to read....such fun.” (Kay Sheldon, Page & Palette)“Such a great read! This definitely proves the wisdom: it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” (Suspense Magazine)“Readers will pull for the unlikely gang in their efforts to commit the ‘ultimate crime’ toward the end of this appealing crime novel.” (Publishers Weekly.com) CATHARINA INGELMAN-SUNDBERG is the Swedish author of over nineteen books. The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules sold more than 1.2 million copies internationally and was a #1 bestseller in Canada. The Little Old Lady Strikes Again and The Little Old Lady Behaving Badly are also national bestsellers.

#1 International Bestseller

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel meets The Italian Job in internationally-bestselling author Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg’s witty and insightful comedy of errors about a group of delinquent seniors whose desire for a better quality of life leads them to rob and ransom priceless artwork.

Martha Andersson may be seventy-nine-years-old and live in a retirement home, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to stop enjoying life. So when the new management of Diamond House starts cutting corners to save money, Martha and her four closest friends—Brains, The Rake, Christina and Anna-Gretta (a.k.a. The League of Pensioners)—won’t stand for it. Fed up with early bedtimes and overcooked veggies, this group of feisty seniors sets about to regain their independence, improve their lot, and stand up for seniors everywhere.

Their solution? White collar crime. What begins as a relatively straightforward robbery of a nearby luxury hotel quickly escalates into an unsolvable heist at the National Museum. With police baffled and the Mafia hot on their trail, the League of Pensioners has to stay one walker’s length ahead if it’s going to succeed….

Told with all the insight and humor of A Man Called Ove or Where’d You Go Bernadette?, The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules is a delightful and heartwarming novel that goes to prove the adage that it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.

Fun, sassy I thought this to be a delightful read. Fun, sassy, a quirky romp. It was a fast read; I found myself zipping through the pages, cheering the elderly characters fighting for independence and reveling in mischief.... However, being of the age considered "elderly" myself, I had to laugh at the "old lady" on the cover, and at the age the author describes as "old." Catharina Ingleman-Sundberg must be so young that anyone over 60 is, in her eyes, seen as being somewhere in their 80's... But I loved it all, anyway. A gifted writer, and a charming story.I was so bored I skimmed the last half I really hate to pan a book, but this one was painful to read. It sounded so promising and had the potential to be sweet and funny. But it was so long and drawn out. And it was not funny. As I was reading, I kept thinking that this may have been better as a 90 minute movie with a lot of slap stick comedy and quirky character actors.Martha Andersson and her four friends live in a retirement home that is more interested in saving money than in caring for the residents. Fed up with budget cuts, Martha and her friends decide to escape. They lodge at a very fancy hotel and plan a robbery at a nearby art museum. Their goal is to ransom the paintings. Their other goal is to get caught and spend some time in prison, where they believe the conditions are better than at the retirement home. All goes mostly as planned except they lose the paintings and half of the ransom money. There are multiple mishaps and something involving the Yugoslavian mafia, a hotel maid, and the nurse at the retirement home. Once the mafia surfaced, I started skimming.I bought this book because it was compared to A Man Called Ove, Where’d You Go Bernadette, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This book is none of those things. It is a very watered down version of A Man Called Ove at best. The writing is basic, the story is not interesting, it was not funny, and I could have edited out about 200 pages. For wit, insight, and charming characters you would be better off reading anything by Fredrik Backman.Living Life Dangerously Taking into account that this is translated from Swedish, it was a delightful read with Seniors living life to the max. The retirement home was cutting corners and leaving the elderly residents to live a boring life. The Choir decided to get away and live a little dangerously. Doing their best to not hurt anyone but dip into the criminal life, and live the good life. I enjoyed the imagination and skill they used to get away with a first class crime. It was in their favor that no one would suspect a bunch of seemingly old, decrepit seniors.

Southern Women Pdf

ISBN: 0062859366
Title: Southern Women Pdf More Than 100 Stories of Innovators, Artists, and Icons (Garden & Gun Books)
Author: Editors of Garden and Gun
Published Date: 2019-10-22
Page: 288

Garden & Gun is a national magazine that covers the best of the South, including its sporting culture, food, music, art, and literature, and its people and their ideas. The magazine has won numerous awards for journalism, design, and overall excellence, and its two previous books, The Southerner's Handbook and Good Dog, were New York Times bestsellers.

From the award-winning Southern lifestyle magazine Garden & Gun comes this rich collection of some of the South’s most notable women.

For too long, the Southern woman has been synonymous with the Southern belle, a “moonlight and magnolias” myth that gets nowhere close to describing the strong, richly diverse women who have thrived because of—and in some cases, despite of—the South. No more. Garden & Gun’s Southern Women: More than 100 Stories of Trail Blazers, Visionaries, and Icons obliterates that stereotype by sharing the stories of more than 100 of the region’s brilliant women, groundbreakers who have by turns embraced the South’s proud traditions and overcome its equally pervasive barriers and challenges.

Through interviews, essays, photos, and illustrations these remarkable chefs, musicians, actors, writers, artists, entrepreneurs, designers, and public servants will offer a dynamic portrait of who the Southern woman is now. The voices of bona fide icons such as Sissy Spacek, Leah Chase, and Loretta Lynn join those whose stories for too long have been overlooked or underestimated, from the pioneering Texas rancher Minnie Lou Bradley to the Gee’s Bend, Alabama, quilter Mary Margaret Pettway—all visionaries who have left their indelible mark not just on Southern culture, but on America itself.

By reading these stories of triumph, grit, and grace, the ties that bind the sisterhood of Southern women emerge: an unflinching resilience and resourcefulness, an inherent love of the land, a singular style and wit. And while the wisdom shared may be rooted in the Southern experience, the universal themes are sure to resonate beyond the Mason-Dixon.

The Introvert Advantage Download

ISBN: B006VUIDIY
Title: The Introvert Advantage Pdf How Quiet People Can Thrive in an Extrovert World
An insightful, empowering guide to making the most of your hidden strengths.

Are you energized by spending time alone? In meetings, do you need to be asked for your opinions and ideas? Do you tend to notice details that other people miss? Is your ideal celebration a small get-together rather than a big party? Do you often feel like a tortoise surrounded by hares?

The good news is, you’re an introvert. The better news is that by celebrating the inner strengths and uniqueness of being introverted, The Introvert Advantage shows introverts how to work with instead of against their temperament to enjoy a well-lived life. Covering relationships, parenting—including parenting an introverted child—socializing, and the workplace, here are coping strategies, tactics for managing energy, and hundreds of valuable tips for not only surviving but truly thriving in an extrovert world.

“Filled with Aha! moments of recognition, Dr. Laney’s book will help millions of introverts understand why they are misunderstood, learn to appreciate who they are, and develop a just-right life in a world where extroverts once ruled.” —Paul D. Tieger, coauthor of Do What You Are

“In a world of shock jocks, screaming rock stars, and sensational journalism, this book dispels the myth that only the loud and flamboyant get ahead. Its clear, step-by-step advice will help introverts recognize and capitalize on their unique strengths.” —Dr. Bernardo J. Carducci, author of Shyness: A Bold New Approach

Insulting The title The Introvert Advantage tricks you into picking it up by making you think there's actually some sort of secret advantage or gift that introverts have. Sadly, that advantage is never truly revealed. Very disappointing, strike one. Next, the book is very choppy and not a very organized or cohesive reading experience. It also uses overly cutesy language like, "innies" "outies" and various other lame phrases. Strike two. And at the end of the book the author basically says that it's okay to be an introvert (for the hundredth time) but that sometimes you have to be an extrovert, and then gives you advice on how to get out there and enjoy life more. Wow. I was basically beyond done at this point. Strike three, you're out. Are you kidding me? I just read this entire book of cuddly wuddly stories and various pats on the back about how it's okay to be an introvert, all for her to flip the table over and go- oh well you're actually gonna have to be like an extrovert sometimes. Bleh. Also, since when do extroverts make up 75% of the population and introverts only 25%? Most other sources I see have it estimated about equally at 50/50, which would make more sense that it's pretty balanced. I suppose the excuse for this misinformation is that the book is simply outdated. It kept going on and on about how we live in an extrovert world and you'd think we'd get some useful information on how great it is to be an introvert but it's really not like that at all in this book, it's surprisingly borderline condescending. The beginning of the book had some decent information, but then as soon as it started getting into relationship issues, it completely nose dived, even though I still continued reading hoping that this "advantage" would be revealed. Most of the book was just cobbled together situations and repetitive ramblings offering very obvious advice. I'm talking basic common sense stuff that the author apparently seemed to think was worth including. I'm not kidding, near the end of the book the author gives us lists of things to do. For example when we go outside we should have all these things to take with us such as chapstick and an umbrella if it rains. Yes, because this is not useless advice at all. Terrible. Besides, much of the supposed advice seems geared toward single moms or moms who work part time, certainly not the average working man.At one point early on the author even tells the reader that if you want to, go ahead and skip around and skim through pages. Why on earth would any author say this to their reader? For crying out loud, sell your book. Convince me why I should read it, don't tell me just to skip around if I want. And that pretty much sums it up, it's a book not worth reading. My advice- do not read this book, you will be disappointed and quite possibly very insulted. This is a poor book about introverts that unfortunately turns into a really lame self help book with a confusing message. This will not satisfy your itch to learn more about introversion and have a deeper understanding of yourself. It fails to deliver the goods, and if anything it further causes confusion and misunderstandings, and that's something that Introverts really don't need.It should be called "The Introvert Disadvantage" While the book helped me understand why as an introvert my energy level gets depleted faster than that of an extrovert what I really got out of the book is that introverts have major shortcomings. The author provides examples of practical exercises to do to survive in a world of extroverts. Most of those exercises work only for women and if you only work part time. If you have a full time job with deadlines you simply don't have time for breathing exercises, long walks, or aromatherapy. Towards the end of the book she teaches introverts how to be more extroverted. There were some good nuggets of scientific research the author quoted but the overall message was disappointing. The book left me feeling like I have major short comings as an introvert and I just need to accept the fact that I'm at a disadvantage. For one third of the price I thought it would have been worth the purchase.

The Necronomnomnom Download

ISBN: 1682684385
Title: The Necronomnomnom Pdf Recipes and Rites from the Lore of H. P. Lovecraft
Author: Red Duke Games LLC
Published Date: 2019-10
Page: 192

Fans of Lovecraft for years, Mike Slater and Thomas Roache are the co-owners of Red Duke Games, a tabletop and card game company based in Pennsylvania.

A Lovecraft-inspired cookbook with recipes to whet your appetite and threaten your sanity

Reading about the slime- covered, non- Euclidean ruins of the sunken city of R’lyeh or the squamous, tentacled deity who slumbers there would make anyone hungry. Starting with the puns and working from there, authors Mike Slater and Thomas Roache have summoned forth 50 funny, bizarre, and horrible dishes such as:

• The Deep Fried Deep One
• Nog Sothoth
• Cthus-Koos
• The Great Old Buns
• The Gin and Miskatonic

Like H. P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon, the legendary and forbidden book of the dead that is “alien to all sane and balanced readers,” this cookbook contains many dark (but still delicious) secrets within its pages. The book comes infested with sanity- melting and mouth- watering illustrations, as well as annotations full of crazed discoveries and desperate warnings about the recipes that brave readers will undertake.

Excellent cookbook! I bought this as a gift for a friend, and he loved it.The cover is heavy and textured, and the gold is shiny. It's really an impressive-looking book. The recipes have awesome sketches, and are entertaining to read, as well. They're written in the style of H.P. Lovecraft. The recipes are also listed more plainly in the back of the book, as well, just in case the flowery language made it hard to understand the steps.I didn't make anything from the book myself, but it seemed like they would be tasty and fun to cook.Great Cookbook! A great cookbook! The art and composition are great, and I love being able to serve delicious snacks, drinks and deserts to my madly screaming guests. Also I now always know what to serve when I accidentally summon a Great Old One to keep them from devouring me!Lovecraft's cook book, if he were to write one Through great Amazonian peril I have at last obtained the forbidden Necronomnomnom! With a minor knowledge of the arcane cooking arts, one can easily reproduce the great recipes therein. Wait... is that a tentacle reaching out from my oven....

Escape from Camp 14 Free Pdf

ISBN: 0143122916
Title: Escape from Camp 14 Pdf One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West
Author: Blaine Harden
Published Date: 2013
Page: 210

"Harden’s book, besides being a gripping story, unsparingly told, carries a freight of intelligence about this black hole of a country." —Bill Keller, The New York Times “The central character in Blaine Harden's extraordinary new book Escape from Camp 14 reveals more in 200 pages about human darkness in the ghastliest corner of the world's cruelest dictatorship than a thousand textbooks ever could . . . Escape from Camp 14, the story of Shin's awakening, escape and new beginning, is a riveting, remarkable book that should be required reading in every high-school or college-civics class. Like "The Diary of Anne Frank" or Dith Pran's account of his flight from Pol Pot's genocide in Cambodia, it's impossible to read this excruciatingly personal account of systemic monstrosities without fearing you might just swallow your own heart . . . Harden's wisdom as a writer shines on every page.” —The Seattle TimesBlaine Harden is a reporter for PBS's FRONTLINE and a contributor to the Economist, and has served as The Washington Post's bureau chief in East Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa. He is the author of Africa: Dispatches from a Fragile Continent and A River Lost: The Life and Death of the Columbia. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

With a New Foreword

The heartwrenching New York Times bestseller about the only known person born inside a North Korean prison camp to have escaped.

North Korea’s political prison camps have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. No one born and raised in these camps is known to have escaped. No one, that is, except Shin Dong-hyuk.

In Escape From Camp 14, Blaine Harden unlocks the secrets of the world’s most repressive totalitarian state through the story of Shin’s shocking imprisonment and his astounding getaway. Shin knew nothing of civilized existence—he saw his mother as a competitor for food, guards raised him to be a snitch, and he witnessed the execution of his mother and brother.

The late “Dear Leader” Kim Jong Il was recognized throughout the world, but his country remains sealed as his third son and chosen heir, Kim Jong Eun, consolidates power. Few foreigners are allowed in, and few North Koreans are able to leave. North Korea is hungry, bankrupt, and armed with nuclear weapons. It is also a human rights catastrophe. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people work as slaves in its political prison camps. These camps are clearly visible in satellite photographs, yet North Korea’s government denies they exist.

Harden’s harrowing narrative exposes this hidden dystopia, focusing on an extraordinary young man who came of age inside the highest security prison in the highest security state. Escape from Camp 14 offers an unequalled inside account of one of the world’s darkest nations. It is a tale of endurance and courage, survival and hope.

Simply horrifying. Once you've started this book, it's very difficult to put down. How this man survived the brutality of a 'Total Control' North Korean prison camp is impossible to conceive. From watching classmates being beaten to death and his mother and brother being executed, to being tortured over hot coals at the age of 13 and suffering near starvation for the first 24 years of his life, to the soul-destroying work ethic and unparalleled cruelty of the prison guards, how Shin Dong-hyuk is still alive, let alone now living happily in America, is breathtaking. His story is heartbreaking from the very beginning, yet his ability to keep on going in the face of absolute punishment will inspire all who read about it. The worst day you've ever had, will likely pale in comparison to a normal day in the life of this guy.Blaine Harden has done a great job of presenting the details, and obviously cultivated a strong relationship with Shin. The book is short but there's more than enough in there for you to appreciate the gravity of the situation in North Korea, and its relationship with both South Korea and China.Worth every penny. The forward says the story as told contains some lies. This makes it confusing to know what to believe The book in its forward says that after it was published, the protagonist confessed to having lied and altered some of the facts related in the book. The author states in the forward that there is no way to be sure which parts of the account are completely true and which are falsehoods. This puts the reader in a bind when trying to form an accurate view of North Korea. As a South Korean, I felt so ashamed of me after listening to the audio book. This is my first book review. I am a voracious reader. However, I did not write a book review until I listened to the audio book. One of the reasons that I did not write a book review was because I was not a native English speaker. Writing in English was not easy to me. However, after listening to the book, I felt like I had to write anything, at least saying thanks to the author and Shin, the protagonist, who had to endure unimaginable horror and is brave enough to share his story with the world. Before I listened to the audio book, I had a vague idea of North Korea. For example, NKorean dictator, Kim Jung Il is less human, mentally ill and very dangerous. He exploited NKoreans and let them starve to death. As the author mentioned in the book, I was one of many SKoreans who were simply ignorant and indifferent to Nkorea. I felt sorry for them but that was it. Their story was one of the typical stories of poor communist countries. Their miserable and horrible story did not affect me on personal level until I encountered the book. It was a shocking and eye opening experience to me. Its horrifying story scared me to death. I had to pause many times listening to the book because I could not stop crying, or simply bear his horrible experience any more. After reading the book, I referred it to my family and friends hoping that more SKoreans be aware of the serious problems of NKoreans. I pray for NKoreans whose rights have been completely violated by their greedy, stupid, and less human dictators, Kim's family. I still do not know what exactly I can do to help NKoreans but I will make my efforts to let more SKoreans know the dire reality of NKoreans. I will continue to have interest in unification of two Koreas and support LiNK (Liberty in North Korean).Again, I sincerely thank to Shin whose courage is indescribable, unimaginable, and inspirational. Thanks to him, I realize that my complaints on life is just luxurious excuses. I envy his inner strength. I pray for his inner peace and freedom. I am also grateful to the author who made Shin's story available to the world in such a powerful way.
